Well,
Briarfields Sanctuary has finally permanently closed.
For
the past 8 years Patricia & I have devoted our whole lives 24
hrs a day, 365 days a year to helping unwanted, abandoned, ill treated
& injured dogs. Literally thousands have been helped & successfully
placed in loving caring homes.
Unfortunately due to a few unenlightened local people, anxious to
build yet more houses near us who do not want a dog sanctuary in their
backyard, the council have issued a closure notice due to lack of
planning permission.
Planning permission to save lives ???? !!!!!
Despite
over 5,000 petition signatures in our support, hundreds of letters
of thanks from grateful new owners of rescued dogs & well wishes
literally from all over the world & following
a personal letter to more than 30 members of Roscommon County Council
asking for help or advice, it became obvious that no help would be
forthcoming when not a single reply or even an acknowledgement was
received !
When
we started we had no idea just what a huge problem there was out there
and just how many poor creatures needed help & sanctuary. At that
time official figures showed over 25,000 otherwise healthy dogs needlessly
put down in local pounds generally for no other reason than that their
callous ignorant owners simply no longer wanted them. The official
solution to the problem is simply to give the dogs 5 days in the local
pounds before euthanising.
Last
years figure was about 16,500 & so it seems that some progress
has been made but obviously this is still nothing less than a scandal
& doesnt take into account countless others who are still
dumped & abandoned every single day.
Take
a look at the pictures on the following ages. Each & everyone
of these came for sanctuary at Briarfields, were cared for, loved
given veterinary treatment where required & subsequently rehomed
& these are just a small sample. We have hundreds more on file.
Unfortunately
this wanton destruction still continues apace. Yet more beautiful,
loyal, loving creatures, literally thousands of which will be put
to sleep in the coming year. No Happy 2008 for them !
There
is no longer sanctuary here but many many caring animal welfare organisations
work tirelessly & generally unpaid to bring about a solution to
this wanton, cruel destruction.
Hopefully,
organisations such as Anvil
(Animals Voice In Legislation) and The
Dogs Trust who are now firmly established in Ireland will be able
to bring about real change.
For
our part, Patricia & I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all
those who helped Briarfields in any way during its existence. We will
of course still be very involved & totally committed to the cause.
Meantime,
the sanctuary premises have been placed on the market for sale. We
hope to move as soon as possible to an alternative location &
take with us the few dogs which remain & which we now consider
to be our forever friends
Our
e mail address will still be briarfieldsanctuary(at)eircom.net
